Influential post-punk U.K. group, The Nightingales will be appearing at Lo-Fi Performance Gallery in Seattle, WA on Friday, September 11

For the first time since 2008, The Nightingales will bring their firebrand literary art-punk-rock to the USA. They will be appearing in seven cities on the West Coast in support of their latest record, "Mind Over Matter" [Louder Than War Records (cat #LTW008)].

"The ’Gales are consistently one of the best live experiences in the country. Forty minutes segued together seamlessly, a cocktail of ’60s garage and psychedelia shaken up with krautrock. It’s heady, fresh and invigorating." - Brighton Noise, U.K.

Touring with Oakland's angular post-punk experimentalists, Surplus 1980 (led by Sleepytime Gorilla Museum's Moe! Staiano).

NIGHTINGALES

Born of Birmingham's original punk group, The Prefects, Nightingales are described by author John Robb as "The misfit's misfits" in his definitive book on post-punk, "Death To Trad Rock." The group, based around lyricist/singer Robert Lloyd, includes Prefects guitarist Alan Apperley, Faust's bassist Andreas Schmid and former Violet Violet drummer Fliss Kitson.

Favorites of legendary DJ John Peel, the Nightingales recorded a bunch of albums and 45s in the 1980s, and played shows throughout Europe. Eventually, the band went on hiatus, but in 2004, Lloyd revived the group--not as a nostalgia act, but as an uncompromising, confrontational contemporary group.

"Mind Over Matter" is a short, sharp blast of melody, rhythm, irritation and humour. The group might play around but does not fuck about. They may indulge themselves but do not waste your time. They could be mad but are most certainly diligent.

From Manchester's Silent Radio blog, “The Nightingales play with rock in a manner that is sometimes difficult, belligerent and downright confusing, but never fails to be utterly compelling.”

SURPLUS 1980

Masterminded by Sleepytime Gorilla Museum's Moe! Staiano, Surplus 1980 is a whip-smart, frenzied musical collective from Oakland, CA. Taking its cues from the jagged punk bands of the 1980s, Surplus 1980 fuses a fierce, muscular attack with experimental out-jazz and no-wave angst. Coupled with Staiano's playful lyrics and riveting performance, Surplus 1980 faithfully and cheerfully updates the angular thoughts and rhythms of post-punk's old guard to a modern-day soundtrack of uneasy listening.

Surplus 1980 has released two albums, "Relapse In Response," and "Arterial Ends Here," which are available on Bandcamp.
