Join us this week for a discussion on the article "Race, Surveillance, and Empire" by Deepa Kumar and Arun Kundnani in the latest issue of the International Socialist Review.

In this article, Kumar and Kundnani recenter the role of racism and imperialism in modern surveillance. Specifically, they argue that much of the debate about recent revelations of NSA and other U.S. government surveillance has failed to address the core questions of race and empire that are central to the government's surveillance apparatus. Racism is used both to coordinate surveillance as well as legitimize these programs among the general population. The authors also review the history of surveillance to demonstrate that it has been present throughout the history of U.S. capitalism and has been critical to the growth of U.S. empire.
