Demand Housing Justice: Stop Slumlord Rent Hikes!

Come Support the Carl Haglund Law against Rent Hikes in Substandard Housing!

Urge Councilmembers to support Amendment 2A to give tenants sufficient time to report violations!

WHAT: Committee vote on the Carl Haglund Law, an ordinance to stop Seattle's slumlords from demanding rent hikes in buildings with housing violations.
WHEN: Wednesday, June 1, 9:30 AM
WHERE: Seattle City Hall, Council Chambers

DETAILS:

Last year, my office was contacted by tenants in South Seattle whose landlord, the now infamous Carl Haglund, was doubling their rents, despite truly appalling living conditions. Alongside former Councilmember Licata and the Tenants Union, we helped tenants organize, and rallied against this abhorrent rent hike. Our rallies spurred City officials into action, leading to a new building inspection which found an astonishing 225 housing violations! Due to building pressure, tenants were able to win a temporary stay in rent hikes, and promises of reform. But we all know that’s not enough.

To follow up, we’ve introduced an ordinance to stop landlords like Haglund from demanding rent hikes in buildings with housing violations. The Mayor and a number of other Councilmembers have signaled their support. That is promising.

But we need to make sure that Amendment 2A passes, to give tenants sufficient time to report violations! By speaking out and showing up, you can help ensure that we have the strongest ordinance possible.

It is essential that we take a bold stance now. We have two more tenants’ rights bills coming up: a bill to massively expand relocation assistance for tenants forcibly evicted by dramatic rent increases and a bill to cap the exorbitant move-in fees that are found all over this city. Tenant protection laws are effective only to the extent that tenants are informed of their rights, are aware of their legal options, and are able to report violations. We need to organize.
