"Richard Maxwell looks at the world with x-ray eyes."
- The New Yorker
In The Evening, award-winning playwright/director Richard Maxwell takes his minimalist, unaffected theater to a new sculptural place on stage.
Tragic, comic, and unexpected, this elegiac and musical work probes the lives, desires, and dreams of three denizens of a dive bar: a fighter past his prime, his manager, and a bartender. The Evening unfolds with monologue, fiction and live music as the story transforms into a living, breathing, autonomous thing.
Dead-pan absurdity, archetypal characters, sublimated humor, and Maxwell's signature non-emotive acting style combine to make The Evening a profound and sophisticated rendering of the human condition.
