This casual 50-seater eatery in the old Katong area is named after Indonesia’s fourth-largest city, the culturally diverse Medan in the North Sumatran province. Owner Harianto Teh and his wife are Medan natives and take pride in serving affordable fare from their homeland; menu items here include bihun bebek ($5.80), duck noodles prepared dry or in soup and soto udang ($6.80), a prawn and coconut-based soup that’s served with Medan-made yellow noodles or rice. For desserts, try es campur ($3.50), a Medan version of ice kacang, or es sokoteng ($3.50), made up of nata de coco, lychee and barley.
