Shop Wonderland is the retail arm of the Wonderland for Detailed Planners event agency, which provides ‘the look’ for weddings and events, from the flowers to the Tiffany chairs and table sets. And their new Haji Lane shop – which sells an artfully curated selection of homeware, from elegantly simple flower bouquets to pom poms, potion jars, stationery and scented candles – does indeed have a Wonderland feel.
Owner Melissa Wang, who is trained in store windows and visual merchandise displays, is obsessive about how interiors are put together – and the shop, with its 20 or so hanging lamps, has a Victorian apothecary-meets-farmers market feel. It’s an impressive piece of understated whimsy.
The playful products are anti-IKEA but not stupidly overpriced. There are corked medicine bottles ($11.90), handcrafted table mats ($21.90) with plate-and-cutlery print, printed Gunny sacks ‘with the farmer’s market vibe’ ($29.90), or three-tiered cake stands ($49.90). The floral selection runs from moss animals (from $14.90) to cotton plants ($12) and more conventional flowers from $2 a stem. On our visit, the store was also selling My Fat Lady cupcakes ($3.90). Even if you don’t want to buy anything here, just entering the shop feels like a treat.
