Join us for a reading group discussion of "Pond" by Claire-Louise Bennett!

Immediately upon its publication by a small press in Ireland, Claire-Louise Bennett’s debut began to attract attention well beyond its apparent weight class. "Pond" captures with mesmerizing virtuosity the interior reality of an unnamed young woman living a mostly solitary existence on the outskirts of a small coastal village. Sidestepping the usual conventions of narrative, it refracts her experience in the details of daily life, rendered sometimes in story-like stretches of narrative, sometimes in fragments no longer than a page. Whether expanding on the best ways of eating porridge or recollecting an encounter with a cluster of cows, "Pond" is suffused with the almost synesthetic intensity of the physical world as we remember it from childhood.
