Thinking The Museum: Exhibition Design Panel Discussion

Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum says
Since the beginning of the twentieth century artists have employed exhibition design as an experimental new art form to intervene in existing institutional structures and art historical canons. More recently, exhibition design has moved into the hands of architects who, in collaboration with curators and artists, develop spatial arrangements that either become part of the artwork/installation itself or advance curatorial concepts through a process that translates a thesis or idea into a spatial essay. This panel will discuss this shift from artistic to architectural practice as well as individual approaches.

Panelists include Kemper Art Museum exhibition designers Frank Escher and Ravi GuneWardena of Escher GuneWardena Architecture, Los Angeles; Angela Pang, visiting associate professor, Sam Fox School; and Jan Ulmer, visiting professor, Sam Fox School. Moderated by Sabine Eckmann, William T. Kemper Director and Chief Curator.
