The surf-photographer turned social-documentarian traverses the Australian social, cultural and emotional landscape in a series of candid portraits

Jon Frank first made waves (heh) shooting the surf and sea in the 90s – before turning his lens on social situations. In 2013, after placing second in the Moran Contemporary Photographic Prize, he used the funds to turn one of his pet projects into a book, The Australians.

The images in this exhibition, part of Head On Photo Festival (but also previously exhibited at Juniper Hall in Paddington), are the product of Frank's years working towards that book, during which he travelled around the country, people-watching, to create a complicated portrait of the people we call 'Australians'.
