The hugely popular Ramadan Nights market that brings thousands of people from across Sydney to Haldon Street and Railway Parade in Lakemba for Ramadan feasting is now over, but that doesn't mean the buzz on Haldon Street has stopped. The multicultural Sydney spot is the third Sydney precinct to have Purple Flag status, meaning it's been officially recognised as being a welcoming, safe, diverse, vibrant and accessible place to enjoy time after dark.  As part of the NSW Government and 24-Hour Commmission's many reforms to continue to put the life back in Sydney's nights, they launched the Purple Flag initiative, an internationally recognised accreditation program that awards certain areas as great places for everyone to enjoy nightlife. The CBD laneway precinct known as YCK (York, Clarance and Kent Streets) was the first area to achieve purple flag status, followed by Parramatta and then Lakemba. Lakemba of course has the Ramadan Nights market once a year, but Haldon Street is lined with many popular restaurants, sweets shops, sparkling lights, as well as buzzing little grocers that stay open until late. It's also easily accessible by public transport, thanks to its train station. The Harbour City does a good line in immersive light experiences, and if you can’t wait until Vivid takes over the city later in May, Luna Park is here to help. The iconic attraction’s newest installation – Sonic Neon – will be opening to the public from Saturday, April 13, and tickets are on sale now. Housed in Crystal Palace – a building which dates all the way back to 1935 – Sonic Neon will take visitors on a journey through six different rooms, with state-of-the-art visuals and a layered soundscape creating a transportive experience. Illuminating more than 150 metres of the historic building, the experience will feature more than 26,000 lights set to a pulsating soundtrack using state-of-the-art technology that’s never been used before in Australia. Tickets to the event are available now, and first release ticket holders will be afforded access to what Luna Park has described as a “secret zone”. Details about this mystery “Blacklight Dessert Bar” are thin on the ground, but Luna Park has confirmed: “Visitors will be able to purchase glow-in-the-dark desserts including custom treats by Sydney’s famous Tokyo Lamington along with glowing fairy floss and soft serve ice cream.” The experience will run daily from 10am for approximately four months, though the exact end date is yet to be announced. The debate over the world's best beach title is fiercely contested. Every player has their own champion and rallies behind it for different reasons, be it the sun-kissed shores, gnarly surf or golden sands. Here in NSW, you’ve got big names like Bondi Beach and Byron Bay, which both made the list of the world’s best beaches according to Lonely Planet. Yet, underrated gems like Manly and Mona Vale also snuck into global round-ups, and the Farm (an hour south of the city) was crowned the second best beach in the country by Tourism Australia. We at Time Out Sydney certainly have our own top beach picks in the Emerald City, but now it’s Beach Atlas’s turn to spotlight their rankings for the world’s finest beaches.   The online beach guidebook compiled a list of the 100 best beaches on the planet, looking beyond the mere natural beauty of each shoreline. They judged beaches around the world against diverse criteria, including party and nightlife offerings, sense of community, cultural significance and natural diversity. They then compiled a shortlist of the top 100, from which a panel of travel experts and influencers voted for their favourites, ultimately leading to one Sydney beach finding its way onto the list of the Golden Beach Awards 2024.  Photograph: Supplied | Destination NSW   Surprise, surprise, it was our famous Bondi Beach that made the list, securing 16th spot. This famous seaside gem was recently ranked as the number one most Instagrammed location in the country.
