Time Out says
Simon Stone's adaptation of The Wild Duck, originally staged at Sydney's Belvoir Street Theatre, was an award-winning audience favourite in 2011 – it toured to London and to Oslo's Ibsen Festival. Now comes the film, Stone's debut effort, and he's attracted a cast of dramatic heavyweights. Ewen Leslie from the stage version stars, with hot new face Odessa Young (recently seen in a similar role in Looking for Grace) as the titular daughter.
The setting is a depressed lumber town, where timber baron Henry (Geoffrey Rush) closes the mill on the eve of his wedding to a younger woman (Anna Torv). Oliver (Leslie) is left out in the cold but is happy to see his old friend Christian (US actor Paul Schneider), Henry's estranged son, who has returned for the wedding weighed down with demons. Miranda Otto and Sam Neill also appear in a highly charged drama of family secrets and lies.
