Purple tears will be shed but the funk will live on as Prince’s band celebrates his legacy

Prince is dead; long live Prince. In tribute to the Purple One – and the next best thing to seeing him in concert – the band from his golden era has gotten back together to play all the hits, including ‘Cream’, ‘Gett Off’ and ‘Diamonds and Pearls’.

This Bluesfest sideshow is the real deal: vocalist Támar Davis; Morris Hayes on keyboards; Kirk Johnson (who performed on Purple Rain) on drums; and a cast of original members, joined by guest vocalist André Cymone, a noted Prince collaborator who’s known for the Prince-written hit ‘The Dance Electric’. Effusive reviews from London suggest fans can be in for a few deep cuts as well as crowd-pleasing favourites – not to mention a chance to celebrate a star who fell too soon.
