Winner: Frankie's Pizza by the Slice

This year has seen some seriously epic new late night eateries open – head to BL Burgers for poutine-stuffed burgers until 1am, Thirsty Bird for juicy fried chicken until 3am, or go all out and hit up Big Poppa's for hand-made pappardelle until 3am. Frankie's, though, have been killing at this game for four damn years. Open until 3am every night and owned by the Swillhouse Group (the folks who gave you Hubert, the Baxter Inn and Shady Pines), it's styled up like a rock'n'roll dive bar, and is a beer-in-plastic-glasses sort of place. But we're here to talk about the food and these guys do really good pizza. Grab a slice from a limited selection at the gingham-tabled front bar for $6, or go for a full pizza off a list of 22 from $18 (ordered only from the dark carpeted back bar, strangely). We're big fans of the ‘Godfather' margherita – it's thin and topped with proper mozzarella and fresh tomato sauce, the basil flavour imbued throughout. The crust, as with all of their pizzas, is chewy and charred and exactly what you want when you're four schooners in. We love the spicy little nubbles of sausage contrasted with silky leeks on the Dante's Inferno, and are equally into the Peddler of Perversions – a veggie party with capsicum, zucchini, mushrooms and Gorgonzola cheese. Spice it up with the chilli oil on your table. Try as we might, nothing beats cheese and carbs for a late night eat – Frankie's, we salute you.
