Sydney's Pinchgut Opera has scored a coup with their latest production, landing Portuguese tenor Fernando Guimarães for the lead in Monteverdi’s The Return of Ulysses. Based on the final few chapters of Homer’s The Odyssey and widely considered to be Monteverdi’s greatest achievement, the opera follows Ulysses as he returns home from the Trojan War to find his place occupied by rival kings keen to seduce his wife Penelope and kill his son. Guimarãres received a double Grammy nomination in 2015 for his performance as Ulysses with Boston Baroque, so we expect great things. He’s joined by Australian mezzo-soprano Catherine Carby, who has performed with the Royal Opera and English National Opera, as Penelope.
