Melbourne's Mr Miyagi will take over Gelato Messina's Rosebery HQ carpark for two days of fried chicken ramen and melonpan ice-cream sandwiches

Messina Eats is a pop-up series hosted by the gelato giants where they invite some big names from the savoury food world to Gelato Messina’s Rosebery HQ for collaborative one-offs.

The next snack festival will be starring another Melbourne fusion juggernaut, Mr Miyagi. This hip Japanese izakaya is all about bringing together ever-popular dishes like fried chicken and ramen noodles with big new flavour combos.

They’ve brought bundles of their edamame and whacky Wagyu beef cheeks, pork belly and tofu hotdogs to the Sydney gelato centre before, but this time around they’re going waffle mad. Expect kitsch-but-fun, standup-dining friendly waffle bowls to be the main event, from November 29-30.

There’ll be three versions to choose from. Fried chicken will be married to ramen noodles via a spicy Japanese mayo, sprinkled with edamame, fried shallots and tempura crumble; slow-cooked Murray Valley pork will meet their noods and mayo-edamame combo beside black bean chilli, toasted sesame and spiced popcorn; and mushrooms braised in truffled soy and sake will slick their noodle bedfellows alongside sesame dressing, edamame beans, chilli and tomato tempura crumble. Order a plate of truffle wasabi fries on the side and you’ll be golden.

And because it wouldn’t be a Messina shindig without dessert, there'll be an exciting ice-cream sandwich. This won’t be just any standard Streets sweet sambo, though: the frozen dessert masters will take melonpan (a sweet Japanese bun), coat it in crisp cookie dough, and use it as a delicious vehicle for vanilla gelato and strawberry sorbet.

Entry is free, and they’ll keep things running all day into the night – unless they sell out first.
