David L Smith Jr. (Born in Boynton Beach, Florida) is an American Trombonist, Educator and Composer. As a band leader, Smith leads the, "Dave Smith Trio," in the Tampa bay area. He performs regularly as the house band at several local bar grill venues. (Which are listed on the home page) He also serves as the band director at a charter school in Clearwater, fl. Mr. Smith spends and devotes his time to performing, educating in efforts to help preserve this wonderful art form, "Jazz" for a large audiences ranging from elementary to college level students.

Born into a musical family at age 8, Smith became the drummer for his father, David L Smith Sr. who was a pastor at a local church in Deerfield Fl. His parents encouraged and supported his musical ambitions later on. His father, a government worker supported his musical activities and bought him his first trombone. His mother, Isabel R. Smith, a school teacher also supported his musical activities and help guide him in developing a passion for educating children. By age 12, he began his first formal music training on the trombone. By high school, Smith became interested in Jazz music and was encouraged to pursue it from his high school band director, Elijah Thomas. Smith attended Florida State University where he studied Jazz and Classic music. During his residency in Tallahassee, Fl, Smith has performed with various Jazz artists including: Vincent Gardner, Wycliffe Gordon, Marcus Roberts, Jason Marsalis, Roland Guerlin, Rufus Reid and the Florida State University Jazz Faculty. He received a Bachelor’s degree in Jazz Studies in August of 2008. In 2010, he decided to further his education where he received a Graduate Teaching Assistantship from the University of South Florida, where he studied and taught Jazz at USF's Jazz Program in Tampa, FL for 2 years and received his Masters Degree in Jazz Performance in May of 2012. During his residency at the University of South Florida, Smith has performed and studied with, USF Jazz Professor, Jack Wilkins and Trombone Professor, Tom Brantley.

Today, Smith currently resides in the Tampa bay area working as a full- time Jazz Trombonist, Composer, and Educator in the Tampa/St Pete/Clearwater area leading the, "Dave Smith Jazz Trio." The Jazz trio consists of: Drums: Dan Pallick, Bass: Rick Adams and Trombonist/Band Leader: Dave Smith. Our repertoire consists of songs from the great American Song Book, Famous Jazz Standards and Fresh Original compositions by myself. We play slow and heart-felt jazz for lovers to fast and up-beat jazz for dancers and listeners. Our mission is to provide and share the wealth and love of America's unique and original art form, "Jazz" by bringing people together and having a great time.
