The Naruyama gallery at Kudanshita should be commended for putting together this unique exhibition, which explores gay visual art in Japan through the work of nine pioneers, including Yukio Mishima’s associate Go Mishima, Kasho Takabatake, Kuniyoshi Kaneko, Sadao Hasegawa and manga artist Gengoroh Tagame. It makes for a fascinating, challenging and occasionally shocking journey into Showa underground aesthetics.
