The Pola Museum out in Hakone looks at mid-19th and early 20th century painting to explore how French women dressed and beautified themselves during a time of rapid modernisation, social change and new opportunities. Exhibited alongside the Monets and Renoirs are vintage fashion mags, photographs, accessories, makeup utensils, dresses and other related articles, allowing visitors to compare painted depictions with the real thing. Looks like another worthy show for history-conscious fashionistas, who should also check out the NACT's Issey Miyake exhibition and 'Paris Haute Couture' in Marunouchi this spring.
