2015 marks 800 years since the death of the influential Zen priest Yosai (1141-1215) who was a major figure in disseminating the philosophy of the Rinzai Zen sect in Japan. He was also the founder of Kenninji Temple, the oldest Zen holy site in Kyoto. This special exhibition looks back at Yosai's life and work through displays of noted treasures from the Kenninji temple collection, including screen paintings by Tawaraya Sotatsu, a master artist active in the early Edo period. In addition to Tawaraya's masterpiece 'Wind and Thunder Gods', several other pieces from temples associated with Yosai and Kenninji will also be on display.
