The Aesthetic Movement, founded in London around the middle of the 19th century by a circle of young painters, emphasised the subjective aesthetic appeal of art over all other values, be they political, moral, or practical. This exhibition, the first of its kind in Japan and subtitled 'Art for Art's Sake: The Aesthetic Movement 1860-1900', delves into this philosophy through an impressive collection of paintings, sketches, furniture, sculptures, and decorative items.
