Asagiri Jam (2012)

Tickets for this two-day fest from the makers of Fuji Rock normally sell out in advance, and it's easy to see why: with just two stages, a laidback vibe and gorgeous views of Mt Fuji (when the weather plays nice, at least), it's one of the nicest music festivals around. Named after the verdant plateau on which it's held, Asagiri Jam is as much about camping as it is music, with evening campfires, stalls selling locally produced milk and a group radio taiso (calisthenics) session on the Sunday morning. This year's lineup mixes popular Japanese festival acts with a scattershot selection of overseas artists, ranging from US indie darlings Dirty Projectors to pub rock veteran Wilko Johnson to legendary dub reggae producer Lee 'Scratch' Perry. Here's the complete lineup; there's a timetable available on the official website:

Oct 6: Chinza Dopeness & Doping Band, Cut Chemist, Dub Squad, Goma & The Jungle Rhythm Section, Tommy Guerrero, Wilko Johnson, Nabowa, Oki Dub Ainu Band, Open Reel Ensemble, Lee 'Scratch' Perry, Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs, Dustin Wong

Oct 7: Arakajime Kimerareta Koibitotachi e, Dirty Projectors, Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, The Inspector Cluzo & The FB's Horns, Takehiko 'Shake' Kogure, Don Letts, Mishka, Mitsukaze & Green Massive, Tavito Nanao, Narasirato, Osaka Monaurail, Rock 'n' Roll Gypsies
