Bukola 'Asa' Elemide and Niang Mahmoud Tété's childhoods were like mirror images of each other: she was born in France but taken to Nigeria at the age of 2; he started his life in Senegal only to be whisked off to France while he was still a toddler. No doubt their respective upbringings had some impact on the music that these singer-songwriters produce, though both of them hew closer to Western traditions than those of western Africa. Asa's sophomore album, Beautiful Imperfection, offers the kind of classic, wipe-clean soul music that would appeal to fans of Norah Jones, while Tété's solo acoustic performances bear more than a passing resemblance to Ben Harper. Both will appear at this outdoor gig, with support from Canadian songstress Kyrie Kristmanson.
