The soulful voice of 'Young Hearts Run Free' and 'You Got The Love' fame, Candi Staton spent the best part of two decades devoted to gospel music before making a well-received 'secular' comeback on 2006's His Hands. The album was followed by Who's Hurting Now? in 2009, both produced by Lambchop's Mark Nevers, who coaxed some beautifully bittersweet moments out of the singer. Sure, she's been overshadowed by Aretha, Tina et al., but – still going strong and still drawing rave reviews at the age of 72 – Staton is a true original.
