James Blake

Even with the benefit of hindsight, it feels remarkable that James Blake has achieved the level of popularity he has. A substantial amount of hype had already accumulated around this young Brit, on the strength of his twitchy, dubstep-influenced instrumentals, but few could have expected the fragile croon and singer-songwriter tendencies that he'd showcase to full effect on his self-titled debut album. An intimate, occasionally glum listen, James Blake nonetheless found an audience far wider than almost any artist to emerge from the dubstep scene – including here in Tokyo, where tickets for this 21st century soulster's first show sold out way in advance.
