Saxophonist Joshua Redman first convened the members of James Farm – former SF Jazz Collective bandmates Matt Penman (bass) and Eric Harland (drums), plus Aaron Parks on piano – for a performance at the 2009 Montreal International Jazz Festival, but the one-off lineup soon solidified into a bona fide group. The quartet will be holding down a four-night residency at Blue Note Tokyo this week, playing selections from their 2011 debut, James Farm – an album whose cinematic compositions sound far more vital live than on record.
