He's just shy of his 20th birthday, but Kyoto producer Madegg has already vaulted to the front of Japan's fertile beatmaker scene. That's mostly because of his music itself – all bright, effervescent tones combined with a residue of West Coast boom-bap – but it's also thanks to his penchant for attention-grabbing gimmicks. New album Tempera, released on the Flau label in May, isn't available in any conventional formats: it's being sold as a T-shirt printed with a barcode. Better yet, anyone wearing said garment to the album release party at Soup this weekend will be able to get a ¥1,000 discount. Smooth. Make sure you turn up in time for the support acts: peerless electronica artist Daisuke Tanabe and Cokiyu, who'll be ditching her usual dreamy schtick for a 'noise' set.
