Chanko-nabe is the legendary food of sumo wrestlers, said to help them put on those extra tonnes – but only if eaten in huge amounts late at night. For the rest of us, it’s just a warming, mixed casserole. Nowhere makes a more atmospheric sampling spot than Yoshiba, a former sumo stable where you sit around the hard-packed mud of the ring where wrestlers used to practise, with live shows every night - including recitations of sumo songs by retired rikishi (wrestlers).
