If you missed July's Mitama Matsuri but are still looking for an excuse to visit Tokyo's most controversial shrine, dedicated to the nation's war dead, then this weekend light-up in September is probably your best bet. Extending its opening hours for the occasion, Yasukuni Shrine illuminates both its sando road and the Yushukan museum between 6pm and 9pm, while the performance programme includes traditional music, kagura and lantern dancing.
