Brothers in the Kitchen says
Refugees and resettlement are currently hot topics for discussion as global conflicts force people to migrate in large numbers. Canada has a long history of providing safe haven for those escaping violence. More than 300,000 Tamils fleeing a brutal civil war in their Sri Lankan homeland found asylum here, establishing the largest Tamil Sri Lankan diaspora in the world. Thirty years after the arrival of the first boatload of Tamil refugees in Canada, found adrift off the Newfoundland coast in 1986, we mark the anniversary with Brothers in the Kitchen, a site-specific live documentary performed inside a fully operational restaurant. Named for the Tamil men often seen working in the kitchens of Toronto restaurants, this unique event recounts personal stories of uprising, exodus and survival. Incorporating elements of music, poetry and dance, Brothers in the Kitchen serves up a feast for the mind, body and soul—stomach included. Shane Smith
