Art and Social Justice
Featuring writer André Alexis, artist Rebecca Belmore, filmmaker Deepa Mehta and musician/artist Buffy Sainte-Marie.

Special performance by Measha Brueggergosman

We look to artists to reflect our lives, but how often do we look to them to shape our future? This fall, the Art Gallery of Ontario and Massey Hall partner with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and The Banff Centre to create a new public platform for artists with the launch of Creative Minds.

The semi-annual series kicks off with an evening of unscripted dialogue on the topic of Art and Social Justice, featuring writer André Alexis, artist Rebecca Belmore, filmmaker Deepa Mehta and musician Buffy Sainte-Marie. Opening with a special performance by critically acclaimed soprano Measha Brueggergosman and moderated by CBC Metro Morning host Matt Galloway, the conversation will consider the role of the creative community in confronting issues of systemic discrimination and social justice. As movements such as #IdleNoMore and #BlackLivesMatter gain momentum in Canada and around the world, Galloway will ask the artists to imagine the actions that they believe could lead to lasting change.

Creative Minds was developed with the support of Series Presenters Jonas & Lynda Prince, whose leadership inspired the development of the project.

The event will unfold over 90 minutes, opening with a short musical performance before moving into the discussion..
