Lecture: Istanbul Transformed, 1800 2000: A Reassessment says
In this illustrated talk, professor Edhem Eldem recognizes that past and present images of a city are limited in what they can tell their viewers. Contrasted images generally fail to explain the process of change that separates the past from present day and transforms the urban environment. The transformations that Istanbul has undergone from the beginning of the nineteenth century to the present are complex enough to warrant a closer and more critical look at the process of change, beyond the basic evidence of physical alteration. Such an analysis is likely to reveal that human, social, political, and ideological changes have left an even deeper imprint on the city than photographs convey.
