Art, food, gardening, preserving, cooking and eating all come together in this unique dinner by artist Lauren Hunter and Anah Shabbar that spans across the seasons.

This summer, Lauren and Anah preserved a variety of local edible flowers using a range of different techniques. Now, as winter settles in, they can uncork their beautiful little packages of bottled summer sunshine to accompany the bounty of the last of the fall harvest.

This meal is flexitarian; please indicate if you would prefer a vegetarian option.

Yam chipotle soup with tomato & lemongrass, topped by a deep fried pickled lily

Greens with roasted onions, rose vinaigrette, orange-roasted fennel

Halved squash with pear, onion and dried garlic blossoms, with Niagara mennonite sausage (optional).

Apple, beet and lavender amuse bouche shot for sipping

Pear and clove sorbet w sugared nasturtiums and warm lemon loaf

Lauren Hunter is a local artist whose allergies compelled her interest in eating farm-fresh, gardening and preparing comfort food from scratch. She sources her fruits, vegetables and herbs at the West End Food Co-Op and from her own garden. This summer, she focussed on different methods of preservation — pickling, infused vinegars, drying, sugaring and freezing — to bring the flowers of summer into colder seasons.

Anah Claire Shabbar lives and works in Corso Italia. Like her many of her neighbours, she takes pride in her garden, from which she sources her cooking, baking and pickling. Anah's desserts draw influence from both sides of the family, as she comes from French and Pakistani background. You can expect a deeply rich, spicy and fresh mouthful when you try Anah's food! Currently Anah works in event planning after a stint helping to open the Social Gardener cafe.
