Thousands of relocations and demolitions later, the Chinese city Datong is not the same place before and after mayor Geng Yanbo’s five-year term. A hard-working yet controversial politician, Geng spearheaded a radical transformation of urban renewal. He attempted to make Datong a tourist site by reinstituting ancient artifacts, such as a wall surrounding the city from China’s dynastic past.

The film documents the perspectives of the mayor, the relocated citizens, public opinion, other government officials, and more. The documentary “The Chinese Mayor” records the transition of Datong from a polluted coal-mining city into a cite of demolition for cultural reconstruction.

Join CASSU and CINSSU on January 31st at 5pm in the Innis Town Hall for the screening for this award-winning documentary! Following the film, we will also hear an insightful panel discussion led by several experts in political science, the study of China, and other disciplines.

We look forward to seeing you there!
