Julia Dickens’ "World To Come" is a series of watercolour drawings depicting fragments of familiar objects and human figures in an imagined future or dream. In these images, items are taken out of their everyday context and suspended in ethereal space, where the function of the objects is removed, where nature rules and the humans exist within it in quiet harmony. The world to come is a subverted utopia or paradise, existing as a post human fantasy, tethered to our current reality only by scraps of things seemingly familiar. Fantasy is precarious, and utopias are impossible: the humans within these space are both free and at the same time confined by realities: solitude and mortality. They are vulnerable yet at peace, they lack the human connection of our world, but live in harmoniously within their own, they are both found and lost.

Julia Dickens is a visual artist based out of Toronto, ON. She studied traditional animation for three years at Algonquin College in Ottawa before attending OCADu for Illustration. She primarily works in drawing, painting, printmaking and installation. Aside from her fine art practice, Julia has been an active poster designer in Toronto’s music community, often creates installations for music events, and has painted murals for Clients like The Drake Hotel, OCADu’s Student Gallery and Ryerson University’s The Scope. Julia originally hails from Ottawa, ON.
