A larky, strung-out tale of two Parisian youths in Ramsgate struggling to lose their virginity rather than improve their English. The fun, a good deal of it at the expense of the boys' boorish, blancmange-eating hosts, is all very well for those with an appetite for sexy adolescent cuteness; but writer/director Lang might have taken more trouble to avoid getting the period (1959) so ineptly wrong. No latter-day 400 Blows, it might well be a hazy chapter in someone's autobiography: arriving in Ramsgate after dark, one of the boys (the future cinéaste Lang?) remarks of a churchyard that it reminds him of the opening of Moonfleet.
