This sentimental debut feature aims squarely for the heartstrings. Nina (Blanchard) is a pregnant, down-on-her-luck waitress befriended by José (Verástegui), a former soccer star haunted by a mysterious personal tragedy. When Nina is fired from the upscale Mexican restaurant where José is chef, he chases after her—just as the lunch crowd is descending. The pair wanders aimlessly through the city, sharing each other’s pain, and winds up at his parents’ L.I. casa for a cathartic taco dinner. Bella is the kind of journey that some critics refer to as magical, and I can’t disagree: Nothing here feels real.
