Two friends head out on a road trip in this emotional British comedy

Like ‘Thelma & Louise’ for millennials, this funny and sad London comedy follows two friends, narcissistic actress Seph (‘Downton’ star Laura Carmichael) and self-loathing ad copywriter Alex (Chloe Pirrie), on a road trip. The two are scattering the ashes of their mate Dan (Jack Farthing), who’s died from pancreatic cancer.

His parents hand over the remains in a tupperware lunchbox and Dan has left a video diary with instructions, plus some home truths. (It gets pretty dark: ‘What’s the point of you? Either of you,’ he drunkenly hisses at one point.) So Seph and Alex’s cross-country ash-scattering turns into a marathon therapy sesh.

The humour is reminiscent of Lena Dunham and ‘Broad City’, and there are a couple of brilliant guest appearances (the best being Alice Lowe as a weirdo tour guide). But for me, ‘Burn Burn Burn’ is better on friendship, that time in your twenties when your mates are your everything – more important than boyfriends/girlfriends/family – the people who know you best, love you mostly but can’t stand the sight of you sometimes.
