Call Me Kuchu: movie review

It’s hard to imagine a figure more courageous than activist David Kato: an out gay man—Uganda’s first, he says—who lives in constant peril from both private citizens and a government that wants to make homosexuality punishable by hanging. (Not to mention the American evangelicals who cross the ocean in search of fresh hatreds to stoke.) This doc doesn’t canonize him so much as bask in his calm persistence, a pointed contrast with a newspaper editor who blamed “homo generals” for a 2010 bombing. It’s far too soon for a happy ending, but in praising Kato’s bravery, Call Me Kuchu at least points to the potential for one.
