4 out of 5 stars
Self-defeating as it may seem, some films are simply impossible to review. 'Catfish' is a documentary made by two smug, blissfully self-absorbed New York media twentysomethings about a relationship forged on the internet, but that's as much as can be revealed without giving the movie away. On one level it's a horribly exploitative, intellectually unadventurous and emotionally manipulative trawl through the darker reaches of the social network. On another, it's a gripping, alarming, ultimately devastating portrait of the desperate struggle for meaningful discourse in the modern world. Either way, this is essential viewing.
