Unusually fascinating for a misfire, this exhausted teen comedy is stymied on two separate fronts. The first has to do with the writing; no doubt that 20 years ago, when John Hughes (working as “Edmond Dantes”) conceived the story of a trio of bullied dorks protected by a hard-bitten mercenary, it had attitude. But converted into a defanged Superbad, it tanks. The second angle is sadder: This was made around the time when Owen Wilson plunged into his funk. It’s impossible not to watch his vulnerable eyes and bulbous nose (repeatedly punched) and not feel for the boy-man.
