Time Out says

This breezy comedy is a real product of the Depression, with Cagney blustering away as the scheming promotions man ducking and diving his way from fronting marathon dance contests, to pushing new wonder diets and making America grapefruit-conscious (an allusion perhaps to the star's notorious fruit-in-the-face scene from Public Enemy). He meets his match in determined mom Donnelly, who's set on marrying him off to daughter Brian, and if the whole thing doesn't make a heck of a lot of sense, at least it speeds along.
