With a mixture of admiration and healthy skepticism, filmmaker Michel Negroponte trains his camera on Dimitri Mugianis---an ex--drug addict with the smiling enthusiasm of a snake-oil salesman. What Mugianis is selling is an experimental treatment in which a potentially deadly West African psychedelic helps junkies kick the habit. But the question remains: Is Mugianis a shaman or sham? The director's fascinated ambivalence sustains the project, at least until a last-act Gabonese initiation ritual switches the focus from the practical to the spiritual, and dubiously paints the former dope fiend as a suddenly enlightened healer. Oh really?
