Stahl's version of the film later made famous by Sirk is superb. Like Sirk, he possessed a sense of composition that bordered on the sublime, but Stahl's supporting characters could sneak in comic touches, making him slightly less absolutist in tone. Try seeing both versions on the same day. You will learn a ton about directorial choices.
