We know Fritz Lang mainly for his dazzling German superproductions, but the guy only improved in Hollywood. An unconventional opinion, fine—but this stunning digital restoration of Lang’s doomy 1941 spy thriller is just more evidence in my column. While it was easy to laugh at Valkyrie’s Hitler-assassination plot, here’s a movie that actually makes it work, with spunky Joan Bennett proving herself an underused heroine. Extras are surprisingly robust: original advertising, artwork and a feature-length commentary by Lang biographer Patrick McGilligan.—Joshua Rothkopf
