The City Dark

Movies

Aiming to find out what we've lost by replacing the night sky with an increasingly wide-ranging grid of artificial lights, filmmaker Ian Cheney treks along with scientific experts, urban bird rescuers and various night-shifters to comment on the consequences of a light-polluted world. He's certainly produced a handsome document (peep the director's own swooning astrophotography!), but Cheney's multifaceted survey never inquires too deeply into any single area. And in a journalistic exercise dedicated to chronicling illumination excess, the failure to mention the environmental consequences of energy overload, even in passing, seems a particularly grievous oversight.
