The Taqwacores
In 2004 Michael Muhammed Knight, a white American who converted to Islam, published a novel about a made-up Islamic punk scene called Taqwacore. His story inspired young Muslims all over the world to pick up guitars and start real Taqwacore bands. Some of these musicians feature in this lively adaptation of Knight’s book, which centres around a student house in New York populated by a bunch of Muslim misfits – skaters, skinheads, and a riot grrrl in a burka – who pray by day and party by night. What this rough-around-the-edges but hugely likeable film lacks in budget it more than makes up for in energy, visual flair and, yes, punk spirit.
