4 out of 5 stars
Three women make desperate nighttime trips from Pulheim, Germany, to Rotterdam in writer-director Angelina Maccarone’s dreamily photographed, deceptively slight tale of destiny and desire. On Christmas Eve, impulsive Antonietta (Schnitzer) has run away to see her rocker boyfriend in the Dutch city. Her dad sends her older sister Francesca (Zimmering) to find her; along the way, Francesca forms a prickly bond with an older woman (Elsner), whose married lover just told her she’s not leaving her husband. Maccarone tells their stories in three overlapping segments, each revealing different facets of the night’s events, and the cumulative effect is hauntingly satisfying.
