This teen drama from Ireland is split almost perfectly down the middle: First, 40 understated minutes following a local golden boy named Richard (Jack Reynor) as he enjoys his last summer before college, trailed by 40-odd gut-wrenching minutes surveying the fallout from a single violent act he foolishly commits at a party. Everything we see before that one mistake suggests Richard is a young man of character; the remainder of the movie forces us to reconsider all of our preconceptions. Director Lenny Abrahamson telegraphs the plot twists—that story about a childhood pet is way too ominous—but he’s assembled a satisfyingly knotted moral fable with some very memorable performances, including a fine piece of charismatic brooding from Reynor.
