Ways to kick start your summer

Test yourself with something new

1. Test yourself with something new

Sun’s out, fun’s out. But this year, make it a new kind of fun—something that says: screw you winter, with your heavy coats and head colds and short days, I’m doing something I’ve never done. Like surfing—book a set of lessons at your closest beach. Or rock climbing (if you happen to be in NYC, they just opened the world’s largest outdoor rock-climbing. Or start learning another language—to prep you well for an extended vacation next summer.

2. Get your reading list together

Long days at the park, long days at the beach: both equally perfect for catching up on those books you’ve been meaning to read all year long (that copy of Purity on your coffee table isn’t going to read itself!) and new books everyone’s going to be talking about. Looking for ideal warm-weather reading? Emma Straub’s follow-up to The Vacationers, Modern Lovers, out in May, which sets its tale of growing up (well after you’re meant to) over a long Brooklyn summer.

3. Book an out-of-character vacation

This summer, you’re not doing no ordinary trip away. Never been on adventure? Book a trip to go ziplining…in Puerto Rico—El Monstruo (“the beast”) is the longest zipline in the world at 7,234 feet. Only ever vacation in the U.S.? Go somewhere where you won’t see an English-language sign for miles. Do you love a packed itinerary—must eat this, must do this, must see this? Trap yourself in a beachside resort, raise a glass of something that will put a grin on your face, and toast to doing absolutely nothing but lying in the sun all day.
Bone up on new summer recipes

4. Bone up on new summer recipes

Big alfresco dinners and cookouts are part of what summer is about. This year, go beyond potato salad and track down a new summer recipe to impress your buddies at your next get-together. A salad of Tuscan tomatoes and big, crusty lobes of bread? Easy and delicious. A heaping tray of light, eggplant lasagna? They will be impressed (and full). Or simply take your trusty tater salad to the next level (go crazy—add salami! It’s great.)

5. Get a picnic set together

Good friends, awesome cheese and enough cold cider to go round? We love picnic season, and a good picnic set will ensure all of your blanket-based afternoons go swimmingly. Must-haves: A large but easily transported basket; a cooler for those ciders; durable plates (and Tupperware for leftovers); a chopping board; a large blanket (with a nylon underside so grass can be easily brushes off); and a wireless touch speakers—just rest your phone on top, start your playlist and your ambience is set!

Teach yourself a new summer cocktail

6. Teach yourself a new summer cocktail

Beer, wine and rosé are all solid options for summer drinking. But they’re not the only options. Stand out with a delicious—and shareable!—pitcher of cider sangria. Instead of white wine, use a dry cider base and mix in Grand Marnier, fresh ginger and lots of apples and apricots. Be sure to stock up on plenty of ingredients; you’ll be making more than one pitcher of this gem.

7. Put together your music fest survival kit

Planning on a summer jam-packed with music festivals? Then you better prepare now by getting together your summer music festival survival kit: hand sanitizer (be gone, germs!); portable phone charger (so you don’t lose your friends); earplugs (you’ll thank us in 10 years); a cheap pair of comfy shoes (they’re not going to survive the summer); and sunscreen—lots and lots of sunscreen.
Produce a summer playlist

8. Produce a summer playlist

Your summer playlist is going to be with you at the beach, on your run, at your parties and while you’re at work dreaming of being at all those other places—so you better make sure it’s all killer, no filler. The key here is balance. You could fill your list with this year’s contenders for songs of the summer (it looks like girl group Little Mix may already have that title sewn up for 2016), but the best summer playlists combine both old and new—think universally loved Beach Boys hits, dependable party starters (Hey Ya, anyone?) and songs for chill, wistful afternoons (Beach House, Bon Iver and whatever else pairs well with a setting sun).
Find a new jogging path

9. Find a new jogging path

You’ve got your new playlist, now to find the place you’re going to blast it hardest: your next favorite jogging path. Firstly, decide what you’re after: Something flat? Something glute-testingly hilly? Something a little private? Then do your research. There are websites and online forums in every city that will point you in the direction of somewhere waterside and stunning (key to motivating you as you pass the will-testing 3 mile mark) as well as appropriate to your level. Start trying them out now so by the time summer hits, you’ve found the perfect spot for you.

10. Then find your rooftop local

And what’s the point of all that exercise if you’re not giving yourself something to burn off? Start prepping for Sundays in the sun with friends (and booze) by finding a rooftop bar near you—it may soon be your second home. What to look for: the right crowd for you (if you like rowdy, follow the noise; if you’re more chill, don’t); a great beer and cider selection; killer views (a distracting vista of a beach/park/city) is always welcome); and shade (you’re in this for the long haul, so give yourself options).
