Restaurants, bars, shops and events in Glebe
There was a time when Glebe felt like little more than the backyard of some student sharehouse: all ramshackle and filled with average coffee and ugly. But lately, the suburb once owned by the Anglican church – reaching way back here – has been staking its claim as a Sydney burg to be reckoned with. There are cute new bars serving tasty, affordable drinks, like The Little Guy, and cafés like Madame Frou Frou and Astor have really upped the stakes as far as coffee-and-bread-based fare is concerned. If you're a fan of Mexican, Glebe Point Road has you sorted: Flying Fajita Sisters is a perennially packed taco-making gem, while Baja Cantina's got a very nice courtyard going on.
Of course, not everything's changing: you can still visit one of the city's best shops in long-surviving Gleebooks, watch dogs chase things at Wentworth Park and a stroll through Sydney University is as pretty a stroll as you will find this end of town. Well-served by the lightrail, with a buzzy, up-and-comer vibe, Glebe should definitely be on your Sydney hit list.
